A comparative study of state saving mechanisms for time warp synchronized parallel discrete event simulation

چکیده
The state saving mechanism constitutes an essential part of any system in which erroneous or undesired executions can be undone by rolling back the system state. One such application is optimistically synchronized parallel discrete event simulation (PDES) systems based on the Time Warp Synchronization mechanism. In this type of systems the state saving and restoration mechanism is essential to the performance. Consequently, several mechanisms which could reduce the state saving overhead in Time Warp based PDES

Trade-Off between Sequential and Time Warp-Based Parallel Simulation
Discrete event simulation is a methodology to study the behavior of complex systems. Its drawback is that, in order to get reliable results, simulations have to be usually run over a long stretch of time. This time requirement could decrease through the usage of parallel or distributed computing systems. In this paper we analyze the Time Warp synchronization protocol for parallel discrete event...

KEYWORDS Parallel discrete event simulation, hybrid state saving , rollback-recovery mechanisms, performance evaluation. ABSTRACT Optimistically synchronized parallel discrete event simulators must sometimes undo, by rolling back parts of the system state, the erroneous over optimistic computation deriving from the decentralized management of the event list. For this reason, an essential part o...
متن کاملOn-line Configuration of a Time Warp Parallel Discrete Event Simulator
In Time Warp simulations, the overheads associated with rollbacks, state-saving and the communication induced by rollbacks are the chief contributors to the cost of the simulation; thus, these aspects of the simulation have been primary targets for optimizations. Unfortunately, the behavior of the Time Warp simulation is highly dynamic and greatly influenced by the application being simulated. ...
متن کاملRollback Overhead Reduction Methods for Time Warp Distributed Simulation
Parallel discrete event simulation is a useful technique to improve performance of sequential discrete event simulation. We consider the Time Warp algorithm for asynchronous distributed discrete event simulation. Time Warp is an optimistic synchronization mechanism for asynchronous distributed systems that allows a system to violate the synchronisation constraint and, in this case, make the sys...
متن کاملDesign Issues for Optimistic Distributed Discrete Event Simulation
Simulation is a powerful tool for studying the dynamics of a system. However, simulation is time-consuming. Thus, it is natural to attempt to use multiple processors to speed up the simulation process. Many protocols have been proposed to perform discrete event simulation in multi-processor environments. Most of these distributed discrete event simulation protocols are either conservative or op...
